THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE ADOPTING A PUPPY OR DOG
- Do you have time in your daily life to interact and care for a dog?
- Can you financially afford to provide regular medical care and monthly preventatives?
- How will you handle unforeseen medical emergencies?
- What will you do with your dog if your job changes or requires you to travel?
- If your dog requires training, are you willing to seek out and pay for it?
- If you live in an apartment, can you afford a pet deposit?
- If you move from your current residence, are you prepared at all cost to take your dog with you?
- If you become ill and can no longer care for your dog, what is your contingency plan for the rest of the dogs life?
- If your relationship ends with your current spouse or partner, are you willing to accept full responsibility for your dog?
- Are you willing to have a dog that is primarily an indoor dog?
- If you are considering having a child in the future, are you fully committed to keeping your adopted dog?
IF YOU ARE STILL READY TO ADOPT A DOG...
All of our dogs are hosted by foster families that accept them in to their homes as a part of the family. We treat our foster dogs the same as we treat our own dogs. Before being selected, each dog must pass a temperament test by our evaluation team. We strive to select dogs that would be happy in homes with children and with other dogs. Before a dog can be placed in an adoptive home, the following must be met for the dog:
- A complete veterinarian exam
- Received their DHPP, Bordetella and Rabies shots
- Heartworm negative and or being treated for heartworms
- Spayed or neutered
- Micro chipped
- In a foster home for at least a week
Since the dogs are in our homes, we have the opportunity to assess their temperament and activity level. Some dogs will do better in quiet homes; some really enjoy a hectic home. Some dogs will do better with other dogs in the home; some will do better as an only dog. Some dogs can be walked by children, some can not. Some dogs can live with cats, some dogs will try to eat or chase the family cat. Some dogs require little exercise; some dogs need a lot of exercise to be happy and well mannered.
The advantage of adopting a dog from Austin Dog Alliance is that we know our dogs and can help you select the perfect dog for your home. Once you have selected, we will help you transition the dog to its new life.
THE APPROVAL PROCESS
We thank you for selecting a dog from Austin Dog Alliance. To ensure a successful adoption, we follow the following process.
- Fill out and submit our online adoption application. If you live in an apartment or lease your home, we MUST have proof that you are allowed to have pets. We will not process your application until we receive a fax or e-mail from your management company.
- We will call your vet and verify the three basics listed below. If your vet does not verify these, your application will not be approved.
- All pets are and have been kept current on all immunization
- All pets, except show dogs or cats, are spayed or neutered
- All dogs have been kept consistently on heartworm preventative
- Once you are approved, you will then be contacted about setting up a home visit and meeting the dog or dogs you are interested in adopting.
- If you AND the foster believe it to be a good match, the adoption will be finalized by you signing our adoption agreement and paying the minimum adoption fee of $200.
- After the adoption if finalized, you will receive:
- A summary of all medical records we have for the dog you adopt
- The form to register your pet's micro chip
